GENERAL PRESS RELEASE

NATALIE KNIGHT PRESENTS

ART FORTNIGHT featuring FOOTBALL AND AFRICA

From JUNE 16 to 28, 2010

at ART-ICLE SHOWCASE (Formerly GORDART),
144, Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood,
Shop no 1, Parkwood Mansions
On the Art strip (opposite Goodman Gallery)

OPEN DAILY INCLUDING SUNDAYS FROM 10:00 to 18:00.

The African Art Fortnight exhibition is a celebration of the impossible dream realised - South Africa hosting The World Cup.
African Art Fortnight combines a fanatical passion for football and a means of expressing feelings through art - both South African pastimes. Soccer and art transcend all boundaries and act as a healing balm, bringing an emotional connection and tribal instinct to represent cultural identity.
Art works on display will in many instances marry the two proud entities-e.g. Goal-Post, a limited edition print combining Jane Makhubele’s beaded cloth with the image of famed Spanish player, Xavi Hernandez kicking a football in South Africa, bordered by Sue Woolf’s unique taxi hand signal drawings (the official stamps commemorating 2010).
The surprise unveiling of famed artist David Gerstein’s Mondial a large colourful three dimensional steel sculpture of a team of footballers is one of the highlights of the show. The master sculptor, whose pieces stand in public squares as far afield as Denmark and Singapore, made Mondial (“of the whole world) as a tribute to world soccer and it will be seen for the first time in South Africa to celebrate the 2010 games. A month long exhibition of Gerstein’s work will follow in the Gerstein Art Gallery, 85, 3rd Avenue, Percelia from July 1- 31.
Other collector’s items and special features include a variety of works by South African artists including William Kentridge, Ephraim Ngatane, Alfred Thoba and David Koloane, signed collage of Taxi Hand Signal artworks, and art books for sighted and blind people.
The works, especially the topical beadwork by Jane Makhubele are transportable and memorable relating to different aspect of South African culture. They cover a broad spectrum of price range as memorabilia of South African and the world’s most popular sport, football.
